The Donny boys bring home the gold!
It's been a great 2011 for the Allrounders Club with some of our lifters doing particularly well this year. Tom Collins improved on his British bench record and gained a bronze medal at the European Championships; Mick Coopey setting a new YNE squat record; Mario Middleton upping the YNE bench record; Paul Wray setting a Commonwealth raw bench press record plus lots of PBs were achieved by our other members.
The club was well represented in this year's competitions with Mario and Alan Morris selected for the Roses match and Tom, Phil Frost, Sheridan Wray and Paul Wray picked for the England team in the 4th Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships held in Bournemouth. The England team won the title of overall champions with all four of our lifters bringing home gold medals and Sheridan being awarded the 3rd best lifter in the bench competition. A great achievement by all four lifters when you take into account that there were over 300 competitors from 13 different countries taking part.
On the domestic front we held a very successful club competition at the beginning of December which showed that we have some bright young prospects for the future. Sheridan Atkinson especially standing out with a very impressive dead lift of 225kg at 74kg Junior class. It also highlighted that a few old stagers might be making a comeback with Alan Twigg lifting a magnificent 192.5 dead lift at the ripe old age of 63 at a body weight of 75.6 kg.
Can we improve on this performance in 2012? Well I think we have a great chance of doing so having the right mix of experienced lifters and good up-and-coming prospects plus a healthy degree of in-house rivalry and competition in the club.
Well done to everyone.
